Dave Kern Victorious in Men's Doubles

Twenty men played in the annual Rossmoor Tennis Club (RTC) Men's Doubles Tournament on September 13 at the Buckeye tennis courts. Doubles teams were paired by a random draw with each competitor playing with six different partners. Each doubles match consisted of a six-game, no-add set. Each game won scored a point. Scoring the most points was Dave Kern, followed very closely by new member Tom Jarvis, placing second, and Allan Tam, third. All three won a "Mosquito Racket Zapper" (batteries not included), shown in the photo, which might also double as an inefficient, electrified pickle ball paddle. One of RTC's greatest, Bob Juengert, ran a well-organized tournament. RTC director of tournaments Randy Kuhl and spouse Lil Kuhl assisted in the setup and clean up after the tournament.

Rossmoor Men Whip Walnut Creek

In the first Men's Interclub League match of the season, the Rossmoor Men's team continued their winning ways, carrying over from an unbeaten season this past summer, with a win against Walnut Creek at their home courts at Heather Farm on September 17. At first doubles, Randy Kuhl and Dave Kern quickly demolished their opponents 6-3, 6-1. The second and third doubles were both decided by third set super tiebreaks. Larry Barclay and team captain Jerry Robinson, playing at the number two position, won their squeaker 6-4, 2-6, 10-6. Mark Patterson and Allen Kent, at third doubles, fought hard, but came away on the losing side 6-4, 3-6, 6-10. Finally, at fourth doubles, John Lee and Ron Wyman won pretty easily 6-3, 6-2. Inexplicably, though, they were the last to complete their match. It must have been the beer and political discussions at each turnover that delayed them. See also
