Round Hill - There
Jul 12, 2015

Rossmoor meets Round Hill CC at their place >>>

On July 12, the Round Hill Country Club hosted the Rossmoor tennis team for a tournament consisting of six men's doubles matches, six women's doubles matches, and twelve mixed doubles matches. Round Hills' format was to play an eight game pro set with no tiebreakers which turned out to be challenging and fun tennis. The winners would be determined by the total number of games won rather than the total number of sets. Although Rossmoor started off well winning 34 games to Round Hills' 32 in the first round, Round Hill won the tournament totaling 165 games to Rossmoor's 103.

Because Round Hill did not have enough women players, four of the matches had a Rossmoor woman playing for Round Hill resulting in a 3-1 win for Round Hill.

In the men's doubles, Rossmoor won only two of the six matches. The Line 1 team of Frank Haswell and Bernie Wolf won 8-2. Randy Kuhl and Mike Ying, playing at line 2, lost 4-8. Ron Wyman and Chris Christopher, at line 3, lost 2-8. At line 4, Ted Lee and Allan Tam lost 4-8. At line 5, Lenny Cook and Roger Artley won 8-1 as did John Lee and Fred Barnes, at line 6, who also won 8-1.

In the women's doubles, Rossmoor won just one of the six matches. Becky Reiss and Cheryl Patterson, at line 1, lost 3-8. The line 2 players, Pauline Hanley and Trudie Anderson, lost a tight match 6-8. Lil Kuhl and Susanne Eldridge, at line 3, lost 3-8. Eppie Ying and Nellie Sawczuk, at line 4, gave Rossmoor their only women's double win with a 8-4 score. Loc Barnes and Cinnamon Renvall, at line 5, lost 4-8. The line 6 team of Linda Spiegelman and Sally Nordwall also lost a close match at 6-8.

The mixed doubles included twelve matches of which Rossmoor had only one win. Reiss and Haswell lost 5-8. Patterson and Wolf lost 0-8. Hanley and Kuhl lost 3-8. Anderson and M. Ying lost 2-8. L. Kuhl and Cook lost 2-8. Eldridge and Wyman lost 6-8. E. Ying and Tam lost 3-8. Sawczuk and T. Lee lost 2-8. L. Barnes and Christopher lost 1-8. Renvall and Artley lost 5-8. Phillips and J. Lee provided Rossmoor's only mixed doubles win at 8-5. Nordwall and F. Barnes lost 2-8

Team captain Kuhl thought Rossmoor played well considering that a number of the opponents were younger players who participated in sanctioned USTA leagues. All the Rossmoor players would like to make the Round Hill tournament and playing format a regular event. Round Hill, who had high praise for the Buckeye tennis complex, has an excellent tennis facility with a balcony for viewing all their tennis courts and an inviting and comfortable inside lounge.

Kuhl wanted to thank all the players for their participation - especially those that filled in at the last minute and the ladies who agreed to play on the Round Hill team. The players want to thank Kuhl for all his effort in putting the team together.

After discussions with Round Hill Country Club this event (and Rossmoor being a host) has been discontinued.)
