Anyone up for a little road trip? >>>

Trilogy (there) --- August 22, 2015

"Anyone up for a little road trip?" is how the tournament announcement began.  Saturday morning, 8/22/15, 16 players and 2 alternates made the one hour drive to Rio Vista to renew RTC's twice yearly Home and Away competition with Trilogy.

Since they only have 4 courts, the competition was limited to a total of 8 matches in 2 sessions, in order to minimize the amount of sitting around time for everyone.  The tournament included 4 men's doubles, 2 women's doubles, and 2 mixed doubles.

In the men's doubles, Bob Benz and Youde Wang, playing in first position, won the first set easily with Benz's court coverage, and hard driving forehands and backhands. Wang's heavy topspin forehand, lobs, and slice backhands also contributed to their early first set win. In the second set, their opponents gave Benz and Wang a much tougher match, narrowly winning the second set in a tiebreaker and giving Rossmoor a one set win and Trilogy a one set win. The score was 6-0, 5-6.
Barry Brian and Rolf Kvalvik, playing in second position, played a tough match but lost 0-6, 2-6.Chris Christopher and Ron Wyman, playing in third position, also had a tough match, losing the first set 3-6, and then coming back to win the second set 6-3.

The only team to win both sets was Bob Askin and Bruce Marts with a score of 6-5, 6-3. They won with Askin's well placed shots and Marts' heavily sliced forehands and backhands. When asked about their win, Askin said that even when they were down 1-6 in the first set tiebreaker, they never gave up.

In the women's doubles, Barbara Blum and Pauline Hanley lost 2-6, 1-6. Gloria McBeth and Sally Nordwall also lost 0-6, 3-6.

In the mixed doubles, Judy Stillman and Ken Haley lost the first set 0-6, then roared back to win the second set 6-4. Nelly Sawczuk and Dave Corliss lost both sets 3-6, 2-6.

Instead of scoring the most sets won, Trilogy decided to score the most games won. This resulted in Trilogy winning the tournament 81 games to 53.

After the tournament, Trilogy treated the Rossmoor players to a lunch of very large cheeseburgers, chili, and barbecue beans. Mark Patterson passed on the winning trophy plaque to the Trilogy team and thanked them for hosting the event.
