The first annual Kentucky Derby Party was a huge success! Thanks to our hostesses, Carol Pillsbury and Mary Ann Shields, everyone had a memorable time. Their choices of food, drinks, including mint juleps, and decorations were superb. The Hillside Diablo Room proved to be the perfect venue for the event.
To start things off the "bookies," Mike Ying, Peter Scully and Dave Corliss, took in bets from participants that ranged from $2.00 to $20.00. The odds for each horse were posted on a large easel board so everyone could imagine what kind of winnings might be expected.
The ladies were encouraged to wear colorful hats for a contest and there was a wide array of interesting entrants! Angie Dometrovich was judged to have the prettiest hat. Most creative went to Irene Wong, and most outrageous was awarded to Rena Benz. On the men's side, best hat was determined to be worn by Kent Wong.
Then things got exciting. The Derby started at 3:07 pm and the room was filled with cheers as the horses took off for the most exciting two minutes in sports. When the dust cleared, the favorite horse won. There were about 15 winners as a result.
Mary Ann and Carol would like to thank their emcees, Dave Sperry and Fred Barnes, for doing such an excellent job. Also, a large number of people stayed behind to help clean up and put chairs, tables etc. away---a real team effort!
Everyone is looking forward to this party again next year.
