Rossmoor at Trilogy
Aug 20, 2016
On a sunny Saturday at 7:30 a.m. on August 20, the Rossmoor Tennis Club (RTC) team of 12 men and 12 women drove to Rio Vista for a 9 a.m. interclub match with Trilogy. The tournament included 4 men’s doubles, 4 women’s doubles, and 4 mixed doubles. Each match consisted of winning two sets. Sets were won by a team getting to six games first. If a match was tied one set each, a 10 point tiebreaker would be played to determine the winner. After the tournament, the winner would be determined by which team won the most sets.
In the men’s doubles, Frank Haswell and Eugenio Ovalle lost a tough match. They lost the first set 3-6, then came back to win the second set 6-4, but lost the third set tiebreaker 6/10. Bernie Wolf and Mark Patterson won their match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Rog Artley and Chris Christopher lost a close match 5-6, 6-3, 6-10. Stuart Coffey and Bob Askin also lost a close match, 1-6, 6-2, 7-10. This gave Trilogy a 6 set to 5 lead in the men’s group.
In the women’s doubles, Pauline Hanley and Linda Spiegelman lost to a very high level team in straight sets. Jane Balg and Mary Ann Shields fared better but lost their hard fought match in a very close third set tiebreaker. Their scores were 3-6, 6-5, 8-10. Shari Wiseman and Gloria McBeth lost their match 3-6. 5-6. Cinnamon Renvall and Carol Pillsbury saved the day for the women’s teams with a straight set 6-1, 6-2 win. This gave Trilogy a 6 set to 3 lead in the women’s doubles.
The mixed doubles group fared about the same. Nelly Sawczuk and Ron Wyman lost in straight sets to two very high level players 2-6, 0-6. Mike and Eppie Ying lost in straight sets 1-6, 2-6. Fred and Loc Barnes played a very competitive match but lost a close battle 5-6, 4-6. The sole winners for the Rossmoor mixed doubles team were Barbara Blum and Ken Haley with a straight set score of 6-5, 6-2. This gave Trilogy a lead of 6 sets to 2 in the mixed doubles.
The final scores gave Trilogy a win of 18 sets to Rossmoor’s 10.
After the tournament, Trilogy treated Rossmoor to lunch where team captain Wyman presented Trilogy with the winners plaque which Rossmoor hopes to win back in next year’s interclub tournament with Trilogy.
