The Villages Tennis Club of San Jose will host RTC for the semiannual
inter club match. Four men's, four women's and four mixed doubles teams will compete. Sign up sheets will be posted at the Buckeye Courts about 2 weeks prior to event. Car pools will be formed. Chair person will be Dave Kern.**
On Oct. 22, a sunny Saturday morning, 24 Rossmoor Tennis Club (RTC) players left the Gateway parking lot at 7:15 a.m. for their annual inter-club tournament with the Villages in San Jose.
The Villages greeted the Rossmoor players with an early morning assortment of breakfast goodies, and, as usual, treated the RTC teams to a day of entertaining and competitive tennis.
The format for the Village tournament consisted of 4 men’s, 4 women’s, and 4 mixed double playing 2 sets each. The club winning the most sets wins the tournament. When the matches were over, Rossmoor came out on top winning 15 sets to the Villages 9. The individual match scores were as follows.
The line 1 mixed doubles players, Sherry Endicott and Frank Haswell, competed in the longest, most exciting match of the day. Both teams displayed great skills in this very competitive match which Rossmoor lost in a monumental two set tiebreaker battle 6-7, 6-7.
Bob and Rena Benz, playing at line 2, used power and excellent shot placement to win their match in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 .
At line 3, Mike and Eppie Ying competed against a very consistent team and finished in a tie winning the set 6-1 and losing the second set 3-6.
Fred and Loc Barnes, playing at line 4, lost their first set 3-6, then rallied back with a second set 6-2 win to tie their match.
At line 1 women’s doubles, Becky Reiss and Mary Jane Kiefer played long consistent rallies to win their match in straight sets 7-5, 7-5.
At line 2 Shari Wiseman and Pauline Hanley had a long, exciting match before finally losing 2-6, 3-6.
Amy Bollinger and Margaret Logwood, at line 3, played a tough Villages duo. Bollinger and Logwood put up a good fight but lost 1-6, 4-6.
Line 4 players,, Carol Pillsbury and Judy Stillman, used consistency and well placed cross court shots to dominate their opponents and claim an decisive 6-0, 6-4 win.
After the tournament, The Villages treated Rossmoor to a sit down lunch featuring three types of chili prepared by the Villages’ resident chili cook-off champions. Team captain Randy Kuhl thanked the RTC participants for rising early for the drive to San Jose and competing well at the event. The two clubs will play each other again at Rossmoor in April of 2017.
