The tournament follows the general outline of the Tournament Common Procedures (included at the bottom) with the following notes:

Background

  • General format is that groups of players are assigned to teams, with an equal number of players on each team
  • Teams play in a knockout tournament to determine all positions
    • It is preferable to have 4 or 8 teams so that the brackets are balanced
    • See details below

Sign Up Participants

  • Participation is practically UNLIMITED so everyone is welcome, the more the better
  • Given 8 teams, it's preferable to have 24-40 players

Confirm and Notify Players [Tournament Week]

  • Remind everyone of the details and the need to arrive by 8:45 to get team assignments

Day(s) Before

  • Buy some prizes ... nothing at all serious! Maybe a booby prize also.
  • Buy food, drinks etc: the average supermarket expenditure is $40 to $50 
    • Pint of Half and half / milk for Coffee/ tea
    • Danish and/or muffins to be sliced up for serving
    • Fresh fruit bowl to be sliced up
    • Orange Juice
  • Assign player to team and print tags 
    • Assign each player randomly to a team by picking from a hat
    • Reassign some players if one team is obviously stacked with too many known strong players

    • Print player tags, team handouts
  • Draw a competition scoreboard with brackets using the club whiteboard. Remember all teams play 3 matches
    • 8 team tournament, 32+ players
      • First team to seven games wins the set; 7-6 wins a set; there is no tie break
      • Front bracket and consolation round with each team playing three matches
      • Match [1a] A vs. B; [ab] C vs. D; [1c] vs. E vs. F; [1d] G vs. H
        • Front draw winner round [2a] 1a vs. 1b,  [2b] 1c vs. 1d
          • Winner 2a vs. 2b for 1st and 2nd, loser 2a vs. 2b for 3rd and 4th
      • Back draw features losers from first round matches in a similar elimination for places 5 thru 8
    • 4 team tournament 24 or less players
      • A round robin competition where each team plays against every other team
      • i.e. A vs B, C vs. D; A vs. C, B vs. D; A vs. D, B vs. C
      • Play to 6-6 all, no tie break, so it's possible to tie a set
      • Winner: most sets one
      • Tie break: least games lost
  • Print enough copies of the playing rules, 1 for each team + 2 extras to be held at the desk

Morning Of, Before Starting [Plan on arriving at 8 a.m.]

  • Check in Players: each player is randomly assigned to a team by picking team colors out of a hat
  • Each team, when complete, must document their playing rotation
